The British Olympic Association remains optimistic that a British football team will compete at the 2012 Olympics.

A deadline of 31st May has been set by Fifa for the four home nations to decide upon a course of action for the London showpiece.

It is hoped that the Football Associations of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will agree to have a united side for both men and women at the games.

A compromise does still seem some way off at present, with only the English FA keen to see the plans pushed through.

BOA chief executive Andy Hunt is refusing to give up hope, though, as he believes it is unthinkable for such an event to go ahead without British representation.

Hunt said: "A letter has gone out from Fifa looking for the home nations to become joined up in their response before the end of May.

"We have been looking to see whether we can facilitate this as we believe most people in the country want to see a men's and a women's football team at the London Olympics.

"We really think it would be an absolute travesty if we didn't have a GB football team and we really hope there will be a solution to this in the coming few weeks."

Hopeful

Keen to see a football side created regardless of which nations are involved, Hunt has refused to rule out the possibility of a team made up entirely of Englishmen taking to the field.

He added: "I am hopeful there might be a compromise solution. I need to remain optimistic as it would be shocking not to have one.

"The FA represents football on the national Olympic committee but Fifa have to agree to us working on that basis."

An all-English side may yet prove to be the best course of action, with Scottish FA president George Peat still opposed to the idea of his country getting involved.

"I have spoken to the Irish and the Welsh and we still agree if any 'Team GB' was formed, it would defeat our whole argument because you wouldn't know if it was English or it was a mixture," he said.

"So, in my view, there shouldn't be any Team GB at all."

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are worried that their standing as individual nations in the eyes of Fifa would be compromised should they form a coalition with England.
