Day Eight - As It Happened

1550 : Close - That stunning 100m race seems a fitting finale to a great day eight in the Olympics. As well as Usain's Bolt out of the blue we've seen four golds for Team GB. Let's hope Sunday sees more of the same, starting with Paula Radcliffe in the women's marathon - surely it must be her time? Thanks for your company.

1540 : Athletics - Bolt - who of course will be crowned Lightning Bolt by all the newspapers tomorrow - is posing for the cameras in front of a large clock that is showing his world record time. Poor Powell looks completely dejected as he's interviewed, sadly the showdown to decide who would be the fastest man on the planet turned out to be a procession.

1536 : BRONZEAthletics - American Walter Dix completes the podium by getting the bronze. Once again Asafa Powell once again failed to flourish in a final, ending up down in fifth.

1536 : SILVERAthletics - While Bolt was galloping away into the sunset the rest of the field were left battling it out for the other two medals. In the end Trinidad and Tobago's Richard Thompson ducked low enough to get it, finishing in 9.89.

1535 : GOLDAthletics - Usain Bolt has not just broken the world record for the 100m, he's absolutely obliterated it. The Jamaican clocks 9.69 and that is despite him flapping his arms in celebration with 10m to go!

1532 Hockey - Great Britain's women are still alive in Pool B thanks to a 2-1 win over Japan. Anne Panter had given GB the lead just after the half hour but her goal was cancelled out on 58 by Keiko Miura. However, the Brits won it late on, Crista Cullen the hero with the crucial third of the contest.

1530 Athletics - The crowd inside the Birds Nest are now waiting desperately for the start of the 100m final. The eight men have made their way out to the track and are getting ready for action. Somebody is going to be a rich man after under 10 seconds of work.

1525GOLDAthletics - Natalia Dobrynska believed she had won the heptathlon gold when she crossed the line after the 800m and, after more calculations than NASA use to get a shuttle to the moon, it has been confirmed the competitor from the Ukraine has come out on top. Kelly Sotherton's second-placed finish meant she ended the competition in fifth.

1520GOLDAthletics - Valerie Vili of New Zealand wins the gold medal in the women's shot put. That follows on from the Kiwis winning a rowing bronze in the men's single sculls this morning.

1515 Athletics - We're getting ready to complete the heptathlon with Kelly Sotherton's medal hopes hanging by a thread. She needs to run seriously quickly to have any chance of a bronze.

1455 Athletics - Kenyan duo Janeth Jepkosgei and Pamela Jelimo, favourites for gold and silver, cruised through to the final of the women's 800m. Olympic legend Maria Mutola also qualified for her fifth final in her sixth Olympics.

1440 Athletics - Another American, Kerron Clement, takes the second semi-final in 48.27s. The other qualfiers are Jamaica duo Danny Mcfarlane and Markino Buckley and Greece's Periklis Iakovakis.

1435 Athletics - Angelo Taylor won the opening semi-final of the men's 400m hurdles in a time of 47.94 seconds. Taylor's team-mate Bershawn Jackson, South Africa's Lj van Zyl and Marek Plawgo of Poland also progress to the final.

1430 Boxing - Next up for Degale on Wednesday will be Kazakhstan's reigning Olympic welterweight champion Bakhiytar Artayev, whom he floored and beat in their last meeting at a tournament in Sheffield in January. The winner of that is guaranteed a bronze medal.

1420 Athletics - Kelly Sotherton earned 622 points for a javelin throw of 37.66m - by her standards that represents a good throw (she managed just 28.59m at last year's world championship). It leaves her in fifth place heading into the final event, the 800m. Sotherton, who is a very good two-lap runner, needs to beat Ukraine's Lyudmila Blonska by something approaching 15 seconds to move up into bronze medal position - not impossible but unlikely I reckon. Ukraine's Nataliia Dobrynska holds a 45-point lead over American HyleasFountain at the top of the standings and those two will battle it out for gold and silver.

1412 Boxing - James DeGale has reached the quarter-finals in the middleweight division with an impressive 11-5 victory over American Shawn Estrada.

1402 Hockey - Britain's women lead Japan 1-0 approaching half-time in their group match courtesy of Anne Panter's strike. They need a win to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

1401 Athletics - The Olympic dream is over for Tomlinson, who manages a best of just 7.70m to miss out on the long jump final. Douglas has also failed to make the semi-finals of the women's 100m.

1356GOLDWeightlifting - South Korea's Jang Miran took gold in the women's over 75kg class. Her clean and jerk lift of 183kg and total of 323kg were both world records.

1355 Athletics - Good news for Britain from the long jump pit - Greg Rutherford has reached Monday's final after a leap of 8.16m in the first round. Anyone who manages 8.15m or longer automatically progresses so Rutherford wasted no excess energy to get the job done. Chris Tomlinson will also be in action shortly.

1350 Athletics - British record holder Montell Douglas manages fourth in her second-round 100m heat and must wait to see if a time of 11.38 seconds is good enough to progress as a fastest loser. Would you have done anything differently asks the track-side interviewer after showing Douglas a replay of her effort - "Everything" is the reply. Sherone Simpson, Muna Lee and Chandra Sturrup were the three automatic qualifiers from heat two.

1345 Athletics - Jeanette Kwakye has managed a personal best time of 11.18 in the second round of the women's 100m. That performance is good enough to get the British sprinter a place in the semi-finals.

1335GOLDFencing - Russia have won the women's team epee gold after defeating the United States in the final 28-11. You could say the American were foiled in their quest for victory.1330 Athletics - Asafa Powell wins the second 100m semi-final but there is a major surprise when Tyson Gay fails to finish in the top four, meaning he will not make the final later today. Instead the other qualifiers are Richard Thompson of Trinidad & Tobago, Churandy Martina from the Netherlands Antilles and American Darvis Patton.

1320 Athletics - Usain Bolt has cantered home in the first semi-final of the 100m, easing down in the closing stages to manage a mere 9.85 time. The other qualifiers from the race are American Walter Dix, Marc Burns from Trinidad & Tobago and Bolt's compatriot, Michael Frater. Britain's Tyrone Edgar was seventh in a time of 10.18.

1306SILVERCycling - It's a GB 1-2 in the end, Ross Edgar producing a frantic finish to snatch silver away from Japan's Kiyofumi Nagai. And this is meant to be a specialist event for the Japanese. Great Britain's stranglehold on the cycling is so strong they should be forced to ride penny farthings round the track to make it fair for the rest.

1305 GOLDCycling - The Great Britain flags are waving yet again in the velodrome. Chris Hoy has become the most successful Scottish Olympian ever by winning the Keirin at a canter, bursting away at the start of the final lap.

1300GOLDCycling - Wiggins has had the ceremony for the first of what he hopes to be three golds at the Games. However, he was unable to break Chris Boardman's 12-year-old world record as had been anticipated.

1255BRONZETennis - Novak Djokovic is the third seed in the men's singles and he's finished third overall. A straight sets win over American James Blake means the Serb takes bronze.

1245 Cycling - Bradley Wiggins has held onto his Olympic title in the individual pursuit to get GB's third gold of the day. Despite trailing Kiwi Hayden Roulston, the Brit took the advice of Lance-Corporal Jack Jones from Dad's Army, bided his time and chased down his opponent. In the end he won by over two seconds.

1235BRONZECycling - Steven Burke has won bronze in the individual pursuit, making up a gap of over a second to comfortably beat Alexei Markov of Russia. Next up - Bradley Wiggins.

1225 Boxing - There's no need for the luck of the Irish in the ring as Paddy Barnes comfortably beats Jose Luis Meza of Ecuador at Light Fly Weight.

1220 Cycling - There'll be two British riders in the keirin final coming up later as Ross Edgar qualifies from the second semi-final. If you haven't seen the keirin then you're missing out on seeing a man dressed in an all-black lycra suit leading the competitors around on an motorised pedal bike.

1210 Cycling - "He's a wrecking machine!" The words of Rocky's coach Mickey in the classic film are perfect to describe Chris Hoy, who has blown away the field in his first semi-final of the wonderful Keirin. Another gold in Beijing and he will become Scotland's most successful Olympian ever.

1155BRONZECycling - And the hits just keep on coming. Great Britain's Chris Newton has won a bronze medal in the men's points race which was won by Spaniard Joan Llaneras, who now heads into retirement as a double Olympic champion.

1150 Cycling - Britain's Rebecca Romero and Wendy Houvenaghel will compete for the gold medal in the women's individual pursuit. American Sarah Hammer, one of the pre-race medal favourites, failed to qualify for the medal round.

1140 Tennis - Russian Dinara Safina is through to the women's singles final after ending the run of giantkiller Li Na in straight sets. It will be an all-Russian final against 2000 silver-medallist Elena Dementieva, who defeated another Russian, Vera Zvonareva

1125 Break - The action has hit a bit of a lull, so let me update you on what has gone on so far outside of the action on the track and in, or on, the water. The US men's team have kept theirmedal hopes alive in the water polo by stunning world champions Croatia 7-5. Meanwhile, the Americans are still unbeaten in the volleyball after seeing off China.

1105 Rowing - The ceremony has just taken place for the men's coxless four, I think it must be the smoke in the air because my eyes certainly seemed to be watering. Well done to the foursome and roll on London 2012.

1100GOLDWrestling - To say Saori Yoshida of Japan is dominant in the 55kg catergory is an understatement. Not only has she won five world titles, she's now retained her Olympic crown.

1040GOLDRowing - Tom James. Steve Williams. Pete Reed. Andy Triggs Hodge. Stand and salute these four heroes wherever you are right now. They have just secured Great Britain a thrilling gold having rushed past the Australians in the closing stages.

1030 Rowing - They are underway in the men's coxless four. The tension is growing and even Sir Steve on the riverbank looks a little nervous. Great Britain are in lane four and going for gold in a strong field.

1022BRONZERowing - Great Britain have been bronzed off in the water so far, Matthew Wells and Stephen Rowbotham just finishing third inthe men's double sculls having been squeezed out of silver right at the line.

1020GOLDWrestling - Carol Huynh could be the most successful wrestler to come out of Canada since Brett 'The Hitman' Hart after taking gold in the 48kg weight division.

1005BRONZERowing - Great Britain's Elise Laverick and Anna Bebington have won a bronze medal in the women's double skulls. They look delighted at their achievement until they have to pop on those dreaded ice jackets. What a way to cool off. Gold went to twins Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell from New Zealand.

0955 Cycling - Bradley Wiggins has just gone so fast around the velodrome that you have to wonder if he's got a motor on the back of his bike. On the final lap he overtakes opponent Alexander Serov on his way to a superb time of four minutes 16. That result means he will race for gold against the Kiwi Hayden Roulston. Steven Burke will battle it out with Russian Alexi Markov for bronze.

0945GOLDRowing - Drew Ginn and Duncan Free claim gold in the men's pairs final for Australia. The men's coxless four is coming up in about 45 minutes, with Britain hoping to make a big splash, and that's not just because they might decide to throw Matthew Pinsent in the water if they win.

0935 Cycling - Steven Burke puts himself in a medal race with a thrilling victory in the individual pursuit. We could yet see him go up against Wiggins in an GB battle for gold! Of the four heats, the winners progress through with the best two times going on to race each other for silver and gold.

0934 Rowing - Congratulations to Wu Yu and Gao Yulan after they claimed China's first ever medal in rowing, a silver in the women's pairs. Considering how quickly they've taken over the diving boards, expect the Chinese to be a force in the water at London in four years time.

0930 Sailing - So much for 'Super Saturday' for Team GB. Ben Ainslie's quest for gold again has been postponed due to a lack of wind. He'll have to come back again tomorrow and try and finish the job off. Thankfully there's no wind issues in the velodrome, so the cycling will be pedalling off shortly with Bradley Wiggins going for glory.

0920GOLDRowing - Romanian duo Georgeta Andrunache and Viorica Susanu have won the women's pairs gold in impressive fashion. Sadly the British pairing of Olivia Whitlam and Louisa Reeve were in sixth.

0905 Rowing - Talk about Olympic effort. Mahe Drysdale has just won bronze in the singles sculls and yet instead of celebrating he's collapsed when he's made it to land with exhaustion, been sick over the side of the edge and carried off to the medical tent. Perhaps the fact he's just won New Zealand's first medal of the Games will be the medicine he needs to recover.

0900 Rowing - A valiant effort from Campbell, but he just tired in the end. As have I. There's a change in the commentary box now as Rob Lancaster takes over. Enjoy all 9.6 seconds of the men's 100m - you heard it here first!

0858GOLD Rowing - Olaf Tufte of Norway rallies late to bag the gold in the men's singles sculls. Campbell faded from halfway and finished in fifth.

0854 Rowing - Campbell's in a silver medal position at halfway.

0851 Rowing - Alan Campbell takes the early lead in the men's singles sculls.

0850 Rowing - Alan Campbell's in lane five. Can he kick-off what could be an incredible gold rush for the GB rowing team this weekend?

0846GOLD Rowing - Bulgaria's Rumyana Neykova wins the women's single sculls! It's the men's singles next at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park, featuring Team GB's Alan Campbell.

0820 Boxing - Earlier on in the ring, Birmingham flyweight Khalid Yafai was well beaten 9-3 by accomplished Cuban Andris Laffita.

0815 Rowing - Gearoid Towey has withdrawn from the Ireland lightweight men's four ahead of today's Olympic 'B' final as a spate of illnesses hit the regatta - Germany and Canada have had to reshuffle their teams too.

0754 Sailing - The abandoned flag is up, the horn sounds, and that won't please Ben Ainslie. No wind, no race. They'll have to do it all again. As much as I want the Brit to land this gold, it's hardly a spectator-friendly sport. Roll on the rowing! And the cycling! And the men's 100m final!

0750 Sailing - The wind is light, the tide is strong. We fear a longer race than expected here. Ainsley is in control of Railey still, but he's pretty much stationary at the moment.

0740 Sailing - Zach Railey is plum last and Ainsley is just keeping close tabs on him. Ainsley is in control and, at this stage, there's a good chance of another GB gold medal.

0733 Sailing - Things going smoothly so far for Ainsley. He's not letting the American out of his claws and is copying every move. It seems that's all he needs to do and the Brit is strong favourite for the gold here. It's early days, though, and we know how this wind can change.

0725 Sailing - And they're off! Ainslie is keeping close tabs on Railey in the early stages. He won't be letting him out of his sight here.

0720 Sailing - Five minutes until the Finn Medal race starts! The starter is optimistic, and we could be in here. It's Zach Railey of the USA vs Ben Ainsley of GB for the gold medal. In about 35 minutes time we'll know who is top dog. By then we'll be switching our attention to the rowing - it could be a golden morning for Team GB.

0700 Sailing - The horn sounds again to signal a postponement and what looked like being a short delay is turning into a very long one. Ainslie's experience could be vital here - if he were a rookie you would expect his nerves to be in bits.

0635 Sailing - Scrap that thought. It's been delayed again due to lack of wind.

0625 Sailing - The sailing is due to begin in 10 minutes time.

0614 Sailing - Still there's a delay in the sailing. Ainslie's quest for gold will be the main focus of our attention over the next hour, before Team GB look to add to Rebecca Adlington's second gold medal in the rowing and cycling.

0600 Sailing - Britain's Ben Ainslie is going for glory in the Finn medal race. He's guaranteed silver but will be hoping for gold - but his bid has been delayed at Qingdao due to a change in the wind direction. They should be away pretty soon, though.

0546 Athletics - Team GB's Nicola Sanders finishes second in her 400m heat to qualify for the semis.

0542 100m memories - As the early athletics session at the Birds Nest draws to a close it seems like a good time to start sending in your emails again. We're revisiting past 100m classics ahead of the big showdown later on, and Simon Waterman has written in with his favourite race from days gone by. He says: "Who can forget the 'Flying Scotsman' Alan Wells, he won the 1980 Moscow 100m gold in thrilling fashion...the great thing about him was you couldn't understand him in interviews...but a brilliant runner!!" Email in your favourite 100m moments to ben.linfoot@bskyb.com.

0541 Athletics - Sanya Richards of the USA wins heat five in the women's 400m.

0532 Athletics - Ohuruogo glides through to win her heat comfortably in the end. A convincing win from the Brit and she's in the semi-finals tomorrow.

0530 Athletics - Great Britain's world champion Christine Ohuruogu runs in the next heat of the women's 400m.

0525 Athletics - Team GB's Lee McConnell qualifies in third in heat three of the women's 400m. That was a tidy performance as she was well clear of fourth, perhaps there's more to come.

0522 Athletics - Despite that personal best, Dennison hasn't qualified for the pole vault final.

0521 Athletics - Libanio Grenot Martinez of Italy wins heat two of the women's 400m.

0516 Athletics - Great Britain's Kate Dennison cleas 4.40m in the pole vault. That's a personal best for the Sale Harrier.

0511 Athletics - In the first of the women's 400m heats, Rosemary Whyte wins comfortably for Jamaica.

0502 Athletics - Laura Turner has fallen at the first hurdle in her 100m quest. She hasn't qualified as one of the fastest losers after her time of 11.65secs.

0500 Swimming - Well that didn't last long! Phelps' win has been officially confirmed. It was very close, but even on the overhead camera it did look as if Phelps got there before Cavic. I can't really see what the Serbians have got to complain about.

0458 Swimming - Dramatic breaking news... potentially. Serbian officials are reportedly to lodge a complaint into the result of the men's 100m butterfly that Michael Phelps won earlier. They reckon their man Cavic actually touched the wall in first place.

0449 Athletics - Jamaica's Sherone Simpson qualifies in third in her 100m heat - but she didn't look at her sparkling best there.

0434 Athletics - Montell Douglass finishes second in her 100m heat for Team GB. That was a promising performance.

0430 Athletics - Kelly Sotherton jumps 6.33m in the long jump, and she could drop a place or two in the heptathlon standings here.

0427 Athletics - Laura Turner finishes fourth in her 100m heat and she'll have to wait to see if she qualifies as one of the fastest losers.

0418 Athletics - Christine Arrone of France won the second heat of the women's 100m. Muna Lee of the USA wins heat three.

0415 Tennis - Tennis results anyone? In the women's doubles quarter-finals the Williams sisters beat Vesnina & Zvonareva 6-4 6-0 while Yan & Zheng beat Kuznetsova & Safina 6-3 5-7 10-8.

0410 Swimming - Back at the Water Cube, Britain's Rebecca Adlington receives her gold medal for her breathtaking win in the 800m freestyle.

0355 Athletics - What an hour at the Water Cube. Let's catch up on the athletics. In the women's 100m heats Great Britain's Jeanette Kwakye has qualified in second place for the next round after an impressive run.

0340GOLD Swimming - Cesar Cielo Filho wins gold for Brazil in the men's 50m freestyle at the Water Cube.

0327 Swimming - A brilliant, brilliant swim from Adlington. She finished six seconds clear of second and smashed the world record by over two seconds. An emotional Adlington said: "It's so nice when all the hard work you've done pays off. I can't believe I went that fast!"

0325GOLD Swimming - Team GB Gold! Rebecca Adlington smashes the world record when taking gold. What a swim!

0321 Swimming - Adlington is seven metres clear at 500m! She's well clear of world record pace - is this another gold medal for Adlington and Team GB?

0316 Swimming - Barely time to catch a breath at the Water Cube. It's the women's 800m freestyle, and Rebecca Adlington goes for gold for Team GB.

0311GOLD Swimming - Incredible scenes at the Water Cube! Phelps was well behind with only 15 metres to go but he finishes like a train to just grab gold! Milorad Cavic of Serbia finishes 1/100th of a second behind to earn silver, while Andrew Lauterstein of Australia gets the bronze. What a race! Phelps equals Spitz's record of seven gold medals at one Olympic Games and he's on course for eight. For once, he didn't break the world record.

0310 Swimming - And now to Michael Phelps, who goes for his seventh gold medal in the men's 100m butterfly. Can he equal Spitz's record here?

0305GOLD Swimming - Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry wins gold in world record time - the 22nd to fall at the games. Margaret Hoelzer of the USA takes silver, while Reiko Nakamura of Japan gets the bronze. Team GB's Lizzie Simmonds was swimming at world record pace at halfway, but finished sixth. That was a personal best and a new British record. She said: "It would've been great to get in the medals but I'm really excited to have swam that fast in an Olympic final."

0300 Swimming - It's the women's 200m backstroke final at the Water Cube. Lizzie Simmonds goes for Team GB in lane one.

0258 100m memories - John Dover, working at a steel works in Germany, rewinds 16 years and to the Barcelona Games, when Great Britain's Linford Christie won the 100m gold. John writes: "His complete tunnel vision blocked everything out of his mind."

0256 Beach Volleyball - Scot from Aberdeen is enjoying the action on the sand. It's 1-1 between Switzerland and the USA, with the Swiss men leading 6-4 in the decider. Could be an upset on the cards.

0254 Athletics - Kelly Sotherton is out on the track warming up ahead of the long jump in the heptathlon. She's in a bronze medal position at the moment but will be hoping to better that as the day goes on. The event concludes after the 800m later this afternoon.

0242 Athletics - Lemoncello said of the incident: "I didn't know whether to run around him or give him a slap and tell him to get of the way, so I did that."

0241 Athletics - Team GB's Andrew Lemoncello fails to qualify in the 3000m steeplechase. He pushed an official who had wandered onto the track out of the way on his final lap!

0238 100m memories - S Oliver gets the ball rolling and he recalls the 1972 women's 100m final in Munich. He writes: "The most memorable 100m runner, in my mind, was Renata Stecher. At 145 lbs, we wanted to recruit her for our Rugby club!"

0232 Caspar Deman asks if Bradley Wiggins is in action today. He is Caspar, at 1155 BST. He goes for gold in the Men's 4000m Individual Pursuit Final and he looks to have a cracking chance of landing it. Caspar ends his email by writing: "Tell me, having lived in Australia for the last 18 months, when did we become so damn good at cycling!??!"

0218 100m memories - Often the highlight of the Olympics, the men's 100m final is one of those events that the whole world sits up and takes notice of. I mean, everyone wants to know who is the fastest man on the planet, right? Today's final promises to be a cracker, and hot favourite Usain Bolt couldn't have looked any cooler in the heats. I'm sure it will be a race to remember - worthy of the great contests of the past. Which 100m finals do you have fond memories of? Send them in to the usual address.

0210 There's not a great deal going on until the action gets under way at the Water Cube at 0300 - so let me know where you are and who you're rooting for today. Who can strike gold for Team GB? Is Phelps a cert to equal Spitz's record? Feel free to go leftfield - perhaps you've got a view on Cuba v Chinese Taipei in the baseball! Send all comments to ben.linfoot@bskyb.com.

0208 Athletics - the walk really is the most bizarre event to watch. When in life do you realise that having a quick stroll is your forte? They're out of the stadium now, and out of sight. I'll have to reposition my focus elsewhere.

0201 Athletics - the men's 20km walk final is under way. 52 athletes are competing for the gold here. They're genuinely walking faster than I can run.

0200 So, to the British interest. In the swimming Rebecca Adlington goes for her second gold medal of the games in the 800m freestyle - that's at 0315. Before that Lizzie Simmonds competes in the 200m backstroke at 0300. Away from the Water Cube, but not the water, Ben Ainslie goes for gold in the sailing at 0600 - he's guaranteed at least a silver, while an hour later it's the yngling medal race, and the British girls (Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson) have just a one point lead!

0155 I'm going to take you through to 0900BST, so let's preview what's in store for the next seven hours. In the athletics it's the men's 20km walk final, Kelly Sotherton will be in action in the heptathlon (long jump) and there's various heats on the track including the women's 100m. Away from the Birds Nest there's some badminton, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, fencing, gymnastics, handball, hockey, rowing, sailing, shooting, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling! I'll be focusing mainly on the finals, and the British interest.

0125 Welcome to day eight of the Beijing Games, the day when the men's 100m final takes centre stage. With the competition for gold hotter than ever the world record could well go, but just who will be crowned the earth's fastest man? Anyway, that's much later in proceedings. The early action sees Michael Phelps go for his seventh gold medal at the Water Cube, while there's medals up for grabs in the cycling, rowing and sailing. I'll go through the British interest in those events shortly. Any thoughts, questions, feedback etc... are welcome. Email me at ben.linfoot@bskyb.com and stay tuned for all the Olympics news as it happens - it promises to be a memorable day.
