Victoria Pendleton became the latest British cyclist to claim gold in the Laoshan Velodrome, winning the women's sprint in fine style.
The 27-year-old showed great power and speed to easily beat Australian Anna Meares 2-0 in the best-of-three final.
Victory for Pendleton, who was a heavy favourite having won the world title in Manchester last year, makes up for the disappointment of missing out on a medal in Athens four years ago.
Her achievement means she follows in the footsteps of British team-mate Rebecca Romero, who won the individual pursuit title at the weekend.
Olympic history
Pendleton had seen off Willy Kanis of the Netherlands to become the first British woman ever to reach the final of the event in Olympic history.
Meares had reached the final despite being beaten 2-1 by China's Shuang Guo, who eventually won bronze, in the previous round.
The result of the third race in the semi-final was overturned when it was deemed Guo had nudged her rival as the pair jockeyed for position.
Despite being beaten, Meares' second place means Australia will not leave the velodrome without a medal, something they have not done since the Moscow Games in 1980.
