The United States will meet Brazil in the final of the Olympic Games women's football tournament.
Reigning Olympic champions the US booked their place in a fourth straight final with a 4-2 victory over Japan.
And Brazil, who were beaten finalists in Athens four years ago, brushed aside Germany 4-1 to progress.
Pia Sundhage's US side were forced to come from behind against Japan, with Shinobu Ohno opening the scoring in the 16th minute.
But goals from Angela Hucles and Lori Chalupny in the space of four minutes before the interval put the favourites in front.
Heather O'Reilly's long-range effort in the 70th minute gave the US breathing space before Hucles added her second of the game 10 minutes from time.
Eriko Arakawa claimed Japan's second in added time, but the result was already beyond doubt.
Prinz pride
Brazil were also forced to come from behind before outplaying Germany to book their place in the final.
Birgit Prinz made history by becoming the first player to score in all four women's Olympic tournaments as she breached the previously solid South American defence in the 10th minute.
Brazil were level before the interval as Cristiane and Marta combined to set up Formiga to score from the edge of the box.
Germany were then hit on the break early in the second half as Marta released Cristiane to slip the ball beyond Nadine Angerer.
Having had a hand in creating the opening two goals, Marta then added a third when she fired home from a tight angle after beating two defenders.
Brazil's fourth goal in the 76th minute was arguably the pick of the bunch with Cristiane's stunning solo effort leaving defenders trailing in her wake before she finished with aplomb.
