Britain's women gymnasts just missed out on making the team final as they finished just one place outside the top eight, although Beth Tweddle and Becky Downie both made it into individual finals.
The GB gymnasts ended up having to watch and wait as it essentially came down to whether Brazil could make it into the top eight.
The Brits sat in eighth place as Brazil ended their qualifying campaign, and after what seemed like an age in calculating the scores, the judges eventually revealed that the South Americans had got in.
Brazil had in fact finished on 233.8 to end up in seventh, while Japan slipped down to eighth and Great Britain dropped out of the final into ninth, just behind on 232.425.
There was some brighter news for Britain though, as both Tweddle and Downie made it through into the individual finals.
Individuals
Tweddle came through on the uneven bars, although she missed out on the floor when she could only come 11th.
In the all-round event, Downie will take on the world's best after she just about scraped in by finishing in 19th place to qualify for the 24-strong final.
"My injury didn't bother me - that's fine now - it had nothing to do with how I performed today," said Tweddle.
"They (her routines) were not the best but that's what happened, at the end of the day that's all I can do."
China and America fought out their expected battle, with the hosts just edging it to go through at the top of the standings.
It was close though as the Americans won three of the four disciplines, but their third place in the uneven bars cost them top spot.
Russia, Romania and Australia all made it through to the team finals, along with France, Brazil and Japan.
