Nastia Liukin just about edged out team-mate Shawn Johnson in a thrilling all-American battle in the all-around competition of the women's gymnastics.
The duo had a thrilling battle throughout the competition, with Liukin eventually coming out on top with a score of 63.325 points, just six-tenths in front of world champion Johnson.
Johnson had defeated Liukin at the US championships and Olympic trials a few weeks ago, but this time the result was reversed, while Yang Yilin of China took bronze.
It was a first taste of defeat for China in the gymnastic events, with the hosts winning both the men's and women's team titles, and Yang Wei powering to the men's all-around gold.
The expected battle between the two best gymnasts in recent years did materialise and it turned out to be a real thriller inside the National Indoor Stadium.
Floor
In the end it all came down to the floor exercise and it was Liukin who went first and produced a sparkling run of tumbles to register a score of 15.525.
The result put the 18-year-old in first place overall with just one more gymnast to go, that being 16-year-old Johnson who then needed a massive 16.125 to grab the gold.
Although the 16-point barrier had not been beaten on the floor it is Johnson's signature event and she produced a fine display, but when she could only match 15.525, it was Liukin who scooped the title.
The gymnast then ran off and was embraced by her father and coach Valeri - who won two gold medals for the Soviet Union 20 years ago.
Great Britain gymnast Beckie Downie claimed a creditable 12th place, after qualifying in 19th out of the 24 competitors.
The 16-year-old starred in the vault and uneven bars and was just outside a top-10 finish with a total score of 59.450.
