Briton Jemma Lowe finished sixth in the final of the women's 100m butterfly as Australia's Libby Trickett struck gold.
Lowe touched in 58.06secs as Trickett clocked a time of 56.73, 0.12 outside the world record.
"It's more than I could have dreamed of," said Trickett. "More than anything, I'm relieved.
"Before the race I felt like I was going to vomit, I was so nervous. Then, as I walked out, I felt this amazing sense of calm come over me."
America's Christine Magnuson touched in second to grab silver in a time of 57.10, while Australia's Jessicah Schipper took bronze in 57.25.
Record
However, there was a world record in the following men's 100m breaststroke final as Kosuke Kitajima won for Japan in 58.91secs.
Norway's Dale Oen led at the turn but had to settle for silver. France's Hugues Deboscq pipped previous world-record holder Brendan Hansen for bronze.
"My performance was perfect and ideal, my time was excellent," said Kitajima.
"It's what I have been hoping for.
"When I saw the screen I could see the time as 59.90 and I thought that was terribly slow, but when I looked again it was 58."
Kitajima smashed American Brendan Hansen's previous best mark, as promised, and now goes on to try and defend his 200m crown from Athens.
