Cesar Filho Cielo won Brazil's first ever gold medal in the swimming pool in the men's 50m freestyle on Saturday.

It was his second medal of the Games in a new Olympic record time, which added to the bronze he claimed in the 100m.

Cielo touched in 21.30 secs, 0.15 ahead of second placed Amaury Leveaux of France while his compatriot and the gold medal winner in the 100m, Alain Bernard, took bronze.

"I'm very happy, I'm lost for words," Cielo said.

"I was a bit nervous before the race but it was my best race ever. My dream was to be an Olympic champion and that is now realised."
