Britta Steffen claimed the 50metres freestyle title in an Olympic record time at the Water Cube in Beijing.

The German touched in 24.06 seconds to pip American veteran Dara Torres to the gold and complete the freestyle sprint double.

Steffen won the 100m freestyle earlier in the week and has now underlined her position as the current sprint queen in the pool.

Australia's Cate Campbell took third, a further tenth of a second behind Torres while her compatriot, world record holder Libby Trickett, was fourth.
