Great Britain's women are on the verge of being eliminated from the Beijing Games after they could only muster a 0-0 draw with USA in their final pool match.

The result leaves Britain hoping winless New Zealand can beat second-placed Argentina by eight goals in their final pool game later in the day.

In truth, Britain are lucky to be in with any shout at all of qualifying for the semi-finals as USA squandered 10 penalty goal opportunities during the match.

In the first half the Unites States won seven corners but failed to convert any with Kelly Doton firing wide from one and goal-keeper Beth Storry deflecting one with her feet in added time.

GB's only real chance of the half came when Olton's Rachel Walker drove wide from a tight angle at the far post after Crista Cullen had picked her out from an 11th-minute free-hit.

Storry made a simple save from an Angela Loy deflection in the 22nd minute while at the other end Cullen's right-wing cross flashed across the circle with no team-mates able to get near it.

Scramble

The USA had a succession of corners towards the end of the half but could not take advantage.

Five minutes into the second half America won another penalty corner and Doton's strike was brilliantly deflected over by Storry, while Tiffany Snow flashed a reverse-stick shot wide five minutes later.

A ninth penalty corner for the US in the 54th minute almost brought the breakthrough but Doton's strike was deflected on to a post by Loy and a goalmouth scramble somehow got the ball away.

Britain's first effort of the second half came 11 minutes from time but Slough forward Alex Danson's cross-shot was never likely to trouble goalkeeper Amy Tran.

GB finally won their first penalty corner with five minutes to go but Slough defender Kate Walsh dragged her flick wide.

In time added on at the end of the match GB had another penalty corner to rescue their chances but the move broke down - and so did Britain's medal hopes.
