Andy Murray's dream of singles gold at the Beijing Olympics is over after he suffered a shock defeat to Taiwan's Lu Yen-Hsun.

Murray, the sixth seed, went down 7-6 6-4 to the world number 77 in the first round despite having led 5-2 in the opening set.

The Scot, who won his first Masters Series title in Cincinnati earlier this month, looked out of sorts throughout his opening match of the Games.

A double fault on set point, confirmed by the umpire after the hawk-eye system malfunctioned, handed Lu the opener.

Murray then failed to take advantage of three break points at 4-4 in the second set.

Lu crucially held serve for a 5-4 lead and then broke Murray in the next game to book his place in the second round.

Murray is scheduled to play alongside brother Jamie in the doubles tournament later on Monday.
