Roger Federer's dream of Olympic gold has been shattered by James Blake of the United States.

Blake produced one of the best results of his career as he sent the new world number two packing with a 6-4 7-6 victory.

The American had only ever taken one set off Federer in eight previous meetings, but stunned the Swiss star to book his place in the semi-finals.

Federer has been struggling to come to terms with a difficult season in which he has failed to add to his haul of 12 Grand Slam titles.

Having lost in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, he was beaten by Rafael Nadal in the finals of both the French Open and Wimbledon.

The 27-year-old was completely out of sorts as he gave an error-strewn display against Blake, who deservedly won through to the last four.

Federer must now look to rescue his season with victory at the US Open, where he will be bidding for a fifth successive title.
