British Yngling trio Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson maintained top spot after six races of their event, and they were joined by Ben Ainslie as he moved ahead in the Finns, but there were disappointing days for the other British sailors.

Ainslie is involved in a thrilling tussle with American Zach Railey in the Finn class, but another win on the third day of the regatta in Qingdao helped him move to the top.

The 31-year-old came from way back in ninth place and 55 seconds off the pace at halfway to win the fifth race of the Finn class - his third win in four races.

The five-time world champion, who hopes to become a three-time gold medallist in Beijing, then only finished tenth in the sixth race, but managed to keep a one-point advantage over Railey, who was seventh and eighth.

The Yngling girls continue to sail superbly well and another two consistent performances sees them remain at the top of the standings after six races.

Two-time world champions Ayton, Webb and Wilson have not yet won a race in Beijing but continuing solid placed efforts means they are leading the way in the gold medal chase.

The trio finished fourth in race five and second in race six to move on to 15 points in total, three in front of Holland who won a race on Monday and also came fifth.

The 49er crew had a poor second day though after a flying start on day one, with Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes sliding down from first to ninth.

Although the 2007 world champions held the lead, finishes in 14th in race four and two 15th-placed finishes in the next two races saw them slide down the rankings.

The British pair now have 41 points from the first six races, and are 28 behind new leaders Australia with Nathan Outteridge and Ben Austin, who won the final two races.

Slow starts

Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield of the British men's 470 crew could only manage 19th place after a poor start, but improved after the second race to sit in tenth, 15 points behind leaders France.

In the women's section, Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark managed to move up from 13th place into ninth after two races.

Bryony Shaw is in third in the RS:X women's category after a fourth and third-placed finish in her first two races.

The British windsurfer has seven points, five back of China's Yin Jian, who won the opening two races, while Nick Dempsey is way behind in ninth overall after two races.
