Britain almost lost their place in the 4 x400m relay final due to Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu's easy run.

After good runs by Nicola Sanders, heptathlete Kelly Sotherton and 800m specialist Marilyn Okoro, Ohuruogu took over in second place behind Russia for the final leg.

Sotherton, who replaces injured Lee McConnell in the squad said: "I felt that was a very sensible race for me. I set a pretty good pace.

"I was petrified getting the baton from Nicola and passing it on to Marilyn but I think we'll step it up tomorrow. I'm only in the team because Lee is not able to compete and I hope I've done her justice."

Ohuruogu looked to have an easy task to qualify by having to come in the top three in the semi-final, yet she took it almost too easy down the home straight as Russia strode to victory.

Allowing Indira Terrero of Cuba to pass her, Ohuruogu was almost caught on the line by Germany's Claudia Hoffmann, which she narrowly missed by putting in a final burst after looking up on the big screen. The GB team finished third in 3:25:48 seconds.

"I was just told to qualify so I was taking it easy but I didn't see the

German," Ohuruogu admitted.

Great Britain's men's strong quartet of Andrew Steele, Robert Tobin, Michael Bingham and individual finalist Martyn Rooney are also through to the 4x400m final after securing a comfortable victory in the fastest time of 2:59.33.

Despite Rooney's taunting of the Bahamas and Jamaica as he crossed the line, the US team still remain top favourites.
